Start with the trailer mix, not the building
Bed heights vary widely across vehicle types, and a dock serving refrigerated trailers, flatbeds and small delivery vans has a much wider service range than one handling a single fleet. Record the highest and lowest bed heights you realistically receive, including part-loaded vehicles, which sit higher than the same trailer fully loaded. That range, measured against your dock height, determines the travel above and below dock that the leveler must cover.
Capacity is about dynamic load
Rated capacity should reflect the heaviest combination that will cross the leveler: the forklift's own weight, plus its maximum load, plus an allowance for the dynamic forces of a moving vehicle. Static weight alone underestimates what the plate actually experiences. If your handling equipment may be upgraded within the leveler's service life, specify for that, because retrofitting capacity is not practical.
Gradient, and why it matters more than it seems
The steeper the ramp between dock and trailer, the harder the crossing is on equipment and operators. Excessive gradient causes bottoming out on low-clearance forklifts, load instability, and accelerated wear. A longer leveler achieves the same height difference at a shallower angle, which is why deck length is a safety decision, not only a dimensional one.
The main types, and where each fits
- Hydraulic: powered operation from a control, generally favored on high-throughput docks and where operator effort or consistency matters.
- Mechanical: spring-assisted and manually released, typically lower initial cost, with more operator involvement and more moving parts to maintain.
- Air-powered: an inflatable bag raises the deck, often chosen where a simpler mechanical arrangement is wanted without full hydraulics.
- Edge-of-dock: a compact unit mounted at the dock face, suited to a narrow bed-height range and lighter duty, where a pit is not available or justified.
Pit or vertical
Pit-mounted levelers are the common arrangement and require the pit to be formed correctly during construction. Vertical-storing levelers sit inside the door line so it can close fully against the dock face, which matters for temperature-controlled and hygiene-sensitive facilities. The choice is often driven by the building and by what the door seal has to achieve.
Specify the safety features explicitly
Lip and deck supports for maintenance, run-off protection at the sides, an integrated vehicle restraint or communication system, and controls positioned so the operator has a clear view of the dock. Treat these as part of the specification rather than options to be reviewed after price.

A product page that publishes service range, rated capacity, deck dimensions and pit requirements lets them check fit immediately.
