Industrial water equipment is bought by people who are ruling suppliers out, not shopping around. A plant engineer with a treatment requirement will look at four or five manufacturers, eliminate three of them in minutes, and request quotes from the rest. Most of that elimination happens on the website, and most manufacturers never find out why they lost.
Quick answer
Publish specifications openly, organize the catalog by technology and application rather than by internal product hierarchy, and replace the generic contact form with a structured RFQ that captures flow rate, feed water quality, application and capacity. Those three changes address the large majority of avoidable losses.
Where qualified buyers actually drop out
1. Specifications are missing or locked in PDFs
An engineer checking whether your system suits their process needs rejection rates, flow capacity, operating pressure and materials of construction. If those numbers only exist inside a downloadable datasheet, or behind a form, a meaningful share of buyers will simply check a competitor who published them on the page.
Gating specifications feels like lead capture. In practice it is lead prevention: you are asking for contact details before the buyer has established you are technically relevant, which is the wrong order.
2. The catalog is organized around your business, not their problem
Manufacturers tend to structure product pages the way their internal catalog is structured. Buyers do not think in your SKU hierarchy. They arrive with an application (boiler feed, process water, wastewater discharge) and a constraint (flow rate, footprint, feed water quality), and they need to filter on those.
3. The quote form asks for nothing useful
A name, email and free-text message produces an enquiry that cannot be quoted. Your engineering team then spends two or three emails collecting the information that should have been captured up front, while the buyer is doing the same exercise with a competitor who asked better questions.
4. Applications are treated as one audience
Pharmaceutical, food and beverage, municipal and power generation buyers have different water specifications, different validation requirements and different procurement processes. A single generic product page has to hedge so much that it convinces none of them.
What to change, in order
Publish the specifications
Put the core technical data on the page as structured, selectable text: capacity, recovery, rejection, pressure, connections, materials. Keep the deeper material, full manuals, sizing tools, CAD files, as the gated exchange. That way the gate sits after technical qualification instead of before it.
Restructure the catalog around technology and application
Let a buyer filter by what they are solving for. Two entry points work well: by technology (RO, ultrafiltration, UV, dosing, wastewater) and by application sector. Most buyers know at least one of those before they arrive.
Rebuild the RFQ as a technical intake
Ask for application, required flow rate, available feed water analysis, target output quality, site constraints and timeline. Two things happen. Enquiries become quotable without a discovery call, and buyers who cannot answer the questions self-identify as early-stage, which is useful information rather than a wasted lead.
Give each served sector its own page
If you genuinely serve pharmaceutical and food and beverage differently, say so on separate pages, in the language and standards each sector uses. These pages also give you something to rank for beyond your product names.
What this does not fix
None of this substitutes for being competitive on lead time, price or references. A better website will not win work you were never going to win. What it does is stop you losing evaluations you should have been in, which is a different and more addressable problem.
A reasonable order of work
- Publish core specifications on product pages as text.
- Rebuild the RFQ form to capture technical context.
- Add filtering by technology and capacity.
- Build application pages for your two or three most important sectors.
- Organize datasheets and drawings into a proper document library.
The first two are usually a few days of work and address the largest share of the problem.
